Probably the most memorable ANZAC day moment of all time...
At the MCG in round five of 2009, 19-year-old David Zaharakis lived out a dream in the Anzac Day clash against Collingwood. A lifelong Essendon fan, he was playing just his fourth AFL game.
The match was a thriller. Essendon led at three-quarter time, but Collingwood surged 14 points ahead late in the final term. Then came the fightback—goals to Leroy Jetta and Ricky Dyson cut the margin to two. With seconds left, Zaharakis marked on the attacking 50 and instinctively played on.
“Zaharakis has kicked a goal! The Bombers are in front at the ’G!” called Channel 10’s Stephen Quartermain. Five seconds after the next bounce, the siren sounded—Essendon had pulled off the impossible: 13.15 (93) to 12.16 (88).
