Ben Hunt delivered one of the great State of Origin match-winning moments, sealing Queensland’s 22–12 victory and the 2022 series with a stunning 79th-minute intercept try at Suncorp Stadium.

With the Blues pressing late, Hunt soared above the pack to snatch Nathan Cleary’s chip kick, then tore 70 metres downfield to send the stadium into chaos and secure the Maroons’ triumph.

His heroics capped a remarkable Queensland effort. Reduced to just 15 players after early concussions to Selwyn Cobbo and Lindsay Collins, and missing Cameron Munster and Murray Taulagi due to COVID-19, the Maroons still found a way to fight. They opened the scoring through debutant Tom Dearden’s sharp ball to Valentine Holmes, before NSW hit back through Jarome Luai and Jacob Saifiti for a 12–6 lead.

Queensland responded on halftime when Kurt Capewell grounded a Harry Grant grubber, and after a fiery start to the second half — which saw Dane Gagai and Matt Burton sin-binned — the Maroons lifted again. Kalyn Ponga’s dazzling footwork delivered a crucial try and a 16–12 lead.

But it was Hunt’s last-minute brilliance — a single, decisive play — that slammed the door shut and etched his name into Origin folklore as the matchwinner.
