Few backyard footy moments across Australasia have been replayed as often as Benji Marshall’s iconic flick pass from the 2005 NRL Grand Final. With the score locked at 6–6, the Cowboys had just escaped a Pat Richards try when Johnathan Thurston kicked deep, forcing the Tigers to start from their own line. Brett Hodgson gathered the ball and linked with Marshall, who exploded into space.
At his brilliant best, Marshall burned past Thurston, broke Matt Sing’s tackle, and tore up the left touchline, skipping around defenders with trademark flair. As he drew fullback Matt Bowen towards the sideline, Marshall unleashed a blind, right-handed flick pass that stunned the stadium.
Richards gathered the miracle ball, fended off Rod Jensen, and dived over to complete a near 100-metre masterpiece. The try broke the game open just before halftime, and the Tigers, fuelled by Marshall’s magic, went on to win 30–16.
It was the defining moment of the match—and a perfect showcase of Tim Sheens’ creative, play-what-you-see coaching philosophy.
